Norwich native wins "Taught Masters" Fulbright Award
PHILADELPHIA – Andrew Stoquert, a Norwich Native was recently awarded the “Taught Masters” Fulbright Award during his second year at Beasley School of Law at Temple University in Philadelphia and will be completing his third year at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, focusing on environmental law.
Stoquert once attended Norwich City Schools through the seventh grade has since moved and graduated from Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda, Florida in 2011. Stoquert went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in 2014 from the University of Miami and is now studying law.
Dr. Barbara C. Gorka, Director of Fellowships Advising for Temple University, assisted Stoquert with his application. “The UK is typically one of the most competitive Fulbright countries, with over 1000 applications for 32 awards, so this is quite an honor,” she remarked in an email reporting his award.
“I chose to pursue a Fulbright for my third year at Temple Law to internationalize my legal education and to challenge myself personally and academically,” Stoquert said. “The Fulbright program provided such a challenge, while also allowing me to study law within the context of sea-level rise and climate change—a topic of global importance.” Stoquert, who double-majored in Political Science and Ecosystem Science & Policy at the University of Miami, has proposed a course of study while in the UK in which he will examine the legal implications of the UK’s sea level rise adaptation plan.
Professor Jaya Ramji-Nogales, who wrote in support of Stoquert’s Fulbright application, commended his, “serious work ethic, strong analytical skills, and keen ability to respond to challenging and unexpected questions.” “Mr. Stoquert is an outstanding student,” she wrote. “I have encountered few students with such self-motivation; he seizes opportunity and does so with humility and high spirits.”
In addition to the academic challenge, Stoquert says he is, “most excited to work with my peers in the UK and to meet other Fulbright students. I am also looking forward to experiencing life in Southeast England, with its proximity to the continent of Europe, and to the challenges that will come with adapting to my new surroundings.”
Andrew is the son of Wayne and Doreen (Hart) Stoquert, grandson of Raymond and Laura Hart all of Punta Gorda, Florida and Yvonne Eicke of Otego, New York.
